Planning Coverage

Publicity and Revenue

Photographs can provide a great source of publicity for any event or sponsor. Your event can have hundreds / thousands of quality images available on the world-wide web, within 24 hours, at very little cost. Pictures for local news media can be arranged while our photographer is there.

And photo coverage provides this publicity not just once but all the time that the photos are on the web.

Free Coverage

This approach does not provide any direct revenue for the organisers - but it avoids the costs and risks as well as the additional work. These are all taken care of by TAimages.

However it is only practical to offer free coverage where there is enough expected revenue from print sales to cover the costs. Typically only a small percentage of competitors request prints so only a small number of events can expect to be covered on this basis.

Shared Coverage

As for free coverage - but the costs are shared with the organisers who then receive a percentage of the print sales income. Events requiring just one photographer have a booking fee between £75 and £150 depending on the time involved. This option does require a financial outlay that may not be covered by income from sales.

Dedicated Event Web Site

Custom web sites for races can make economic sense where the organisers expect high levels of photo sales and have a large enough field to justify the costs.

This approach has some risks but the advantage is that organisers then have control of the event photos and can set their own prices. They also have a range of options for how they are used. One way is to add a little to the entry fee and then offer free image downloads. Another is to offer prints as part of the prize list. Event sponsors may also be prepared to underwrite the photography costs to reduce or remove the organiser’s financial risks.

Setting-up a web site needs a budget of around £300 to create a basic design and register a new domain name (URL) plus pay for hosting for 12 months. This will cost more if e-commerce features are needed; less if done by volunteers or you already have a suitable site.

The editing, resizing and uploading the images / web pages after the event requires around 3 hours work per 500 images for an experienced operator. This can be done by someone from the promoting organisation or at a cost of around £10/hour.

Getting photos of a commercial standard can be handled in at least two ways. By paying a photographer for the rights to use the race photos taken - these rights could cost around £10 per 150 images - for events with a minimum of 1,000 competitors. Or by simply hiring a photographer at a cost of £75 to £150 for the event. Large events will need several photographers.

Businesses that sponsor events can gain more value from their investment by providing sports photo pages - either as part of their main web site or by linking to a photo web site that is branded in their corporate style. This approach even more attractive to sponsors if they support a range of events - especially if these events are spread over an extended time period and are in different locations.
